Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and Sexually
Transmitted Infections (STIs) affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and from all walks of life. There are more than
50 sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, hepatitis B,
the herpesvirus, genital warts, HIV/AIDS, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), syphilis, chancroid and others. 25-percent
do not know they are infected. In the U.S. alone there are approximately 19 million new cases each year, about half
of which occur among youth ages 15-24 years.
